PROGRAM OBJECTIVE:

This program prepares graduates with the physical and technical skills required by employers in a number of massage settings. Graduates are eligible to become Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCTMB) upon passing the national examination. According to the American Massage Therapy Association, this certification represents the highest professional credential in the field and incorporates ethics, eligibility, practice and competency testing. The program curriculum includes a strong core of theory, with emphasis on practical skills development in a supervised clinical setting. Anatomy and physiology courses are integrated with instruction in therapeutic massage principles. Training in hydrotherapy and allied therapeutic modalities among other essential subjects, provides students with an excellent foundation for entry into the natural health field.  In addition, the program includes training in business and career development, clinical assessment, injury evaluation and treatment, and newly emerging therapeutic modalities.  Click here for admissions requirements.

MT 111

Intro to Massage Swedish Technique

This course consists of comprehensive training in Swedish Massage Technique including effleurage, petrissage, friction, joint movements, vibration and tapotament.

Therapeutic Skills are introduced during this course. The student will learn how to conduct an interview, to design a client session, and develop SOAP note charts.

SPA Therapies are introduced including Aromatherapy, Hot Stone Therapy, Bodywraps, muds and scrubs.

Instruction is given in Light Touch and Polarity Therapies to introduce the student to the body’s energy fields. Class participation in a Community Event arranged during this course will introduce the student to the public.

Chair Massage will be demonstrated and practiced in this course. Successful completion of all course requirements will gain the student Swedish Certification.

MT 121

Sports Massage

Orthopedic Assessment

This course is an introduction to Sports Massage and Kinesiology. Recognition of these physical conditions and their consequences on therapeutic applications are stressed.

An in-depth study and training in Orthopedic Assessment.

This course is designed to provide a study on the applications of Water as a therapeutic and rehabilitative medium.

One Community Event will be scheduled during this term.

First Aid will also be taught in this course and students will receive certification in CPR.

Asian Studies

This course gives an extensive practical introduction to Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Thai Massage and Thai Yoga are introduced as well as Ayurvedic Medicine.

This course is designed to provide an in-depth study in Asian Medicine and Philosophy.

Myofascial Release

Cranciosacral Therapy

This course is designed to introduce the student to Myofascial Release techniques.

Postural Analysis is included to assess problems associated with fascial tension and physiological responses to release of the fascia. Craniosacral Therapy is also introduced in this course.

MT 151-A

Neuromuscular Therapy

In this course, the student is trained in Neuromuscular Therapy; including trigger point methods and muscle energy techniques which are included to give the student an overview of using movement to create a specific physiologic response.

Upon successful completion of NMT, certification is awarded.

Deep Tissue

This course is designed to integrate other modalities learned into Deep Tissue Therapy. A continuation of the development of the personal and therapeutic skills for massage therapy is followed.

Upon successful completion of Deep Tissue, certification is awarded.

In these courses, a formal Clinic setting allows the student to interact and work with the Public, using skills they have learned in class.This course prepares the student for the professional massage work environment. In addition to skills practice, students learn all aspects of the professional setting from floor management to front desk.

Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology

HAPP III is a comprehensive concentration into the Anatomy of Muscles and Bones with discussions about anatomical positions, directions, and body sections and movement related to those structures.

The structural level of organization, overview of organ systems, cells and tissues, circulatory, and lymphatic systems are included.

HAPP 121

Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology

The course is designed to instruct the student in the anatomy and function of the organ systems of the human body with emphasis placed on the muscular, skeletal, and digestive systems.

Acid-base balance, nutrition and metabolism are also discussed.

Medical Terminology is studied

Ligaments and Muscular Attachments are explored.

HAPP 141

Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology

In this course, the student is introduced to the anatomy and function of the Spine, SI Joints, Neck, Shoulder, Abdomen, Forearm, Hand, Ankle, Feet, and Wrist.

Systems studied in this course include the Respiratory, Circulatory, Endocrine, and Lymphatic.

Pathological Conditions of the body systems are discussed.

HAPP 151

Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology

This course is designed to introduce the student to the bones and muscles of the skull, face, and jaw.

The anatomy and function of the urinary, reproductive, nervous systems, and sense organs will also be introduced.

General pathology of these organs systems will be included.

Review for the National Certification for Therapeutic Massage is also accomplished in this course.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Employment opportunities for entry-level licensed massage therapists exist in a broad range of settings such as: resort hotels, health spas, fitness centers, massage therapy clinics, chiropractic offices, plastic surgeon offices, physical therapy clinics, hospitals and wellness centers, cruise lines and sports settings. Additionally, many therapists develop their own private massage practices, and/or diversify their employment by working in a combination of these settings.
